University information

The University of Cape Town is an Afropolitan university. The ‘Afro’ element connotes an open assertive engagement with the world from the standpoint of Africa. It describes a growth in African studies, particularly the economic sociologies of different African countries and regions. Businesses, governments, NGOs all over the world will know that if you want to understand Africa and how to operate there, you must go to UCT. ‘Politan’ suggests cosmopolitan and signals a sophisticated and future oriented approach to understanding Africa, as opposed to a sentimental, naïve, often ‘rural peasant and wildlife’ view of what an African perspective is.

Dr Max Price, Vice Chancellor of UCT

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is located in Cape Town, the southern-most tip of Africa.  UCT is a world-class African university with a strong focus on research and post-graduate studies.  About 18% of our 21 000 students are enrolled for PhD or master’s degrees and are highly sought-after both locally and abroad.  The university is rated 179th in the Times Higher Education QS World University Rankings 2008 and the only African university listed in the top 200. Its roots go back to 1829 when it was known as the South African College – a school for boys that also provided some tertiary education. Women were only admitted after 1887.

UCT has presented honorary degrees to more than 330 recipients over the years, including former president Nelson Mandela and the Queen Mother. UCT has five Nobel Laureates among its alumni: Dr Max Theiler (medicine, 1951), Dr Ralph Bunche (peace, 1950), Sir Aaron Klug (chemistry, 1982), Professor Allan McLeod Cormack (medicine, 1979), and Emeritus Professor J M Coetzee (literature, 2003). Other notable alumni include Professor Chris Barnard, who performed the world’s first heart transplant.

More than 42% of UCT’s current students are enrolled in Information Systems (Commerce), Science, Engineering and Health Sciences. South Africa’s National Research Foundation has identified UCT as one of the country’s leading research universities in Science, Humanities, Engineering and Technology. We currently have 4 320 International students from 104 countries studying on our spectacular campus.

General information

Known as the “fairest Cape in all the world” we are delighted to bring ICIME 2010 conference to Cape Town. Situated below the slopes of Table Mountain, Cape Town has been called one of the most beautiful cities on Earth, with a cosmopolitan community that enriches its wide diversity of languages, cultures and architectural styles. It brings together in one city much of what is best in sub-Saharan Africa. The surrounding country-side is home to arguably some of the finest vineyards the world.

There are stunning views of the sea and mountains and the climate is variable, with hot dry summers and cool wet winters. For more information, visit the City of Cape Town website or some of the other sites listed further down this page.

Getting to

By Air-

The newly refurbished and renovated Cape Town International Airport is located on the N2 highway about 20 minutes (22km) from the city centre. Although Johannesburg International Airport is the main hub for flights into and out of South Africa, Cape Town International is nevertheless a busy airport with many of the major airlines flying direct to Cape Town. More information

By car – To reach the university from the airport, proceed on the N2 towards Cape Town and take the Muizenberg (M3) off-ramp.  Just beyond Mostert's Mill (windmill) on your left, take the Woolsack Drive/University of Cape Town turn-off (Exit 7 Rosebank - M89). At the traffic light turn right under the bridge towards Upper-Campus.

Please check in at the Visitors' Reception and Information Office (VRIC) opposite the Sports Centre, where directions, campus maps and temporary visitors' parking permits may be obtained.
