General information

Hong Kong is situated on the southeastern coast of China and covers an area of 1,104 square kilometres (425 square miles). It comprises Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, which incorporates 262 outlying islands, including Lantau where the airport is located. Hong Kong is geographically compact and boasts one of the world's most efficient public transport systems. Travelers can get around the city easily by taxi, ferry, rail, bus or tram.

Hong Kong was under British rule for 156 years before reverting to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The unique blend of eastern and western influences has made Hong Kong a prime destination for business and tourism. Chinese and English are the official languages of Hong Kong. All official signs are bilingual. Most taxi drivers and salespeople are able to communicate in English.

Hong Kong offers a host of memorable tourist attractions within its compact area, with The Peak, Victoria Harbour and the Giant Buddha among the most awe-inspiring. One will be amazed by the diverse contrasts and close proximity of stunning cityscapes and soaring mountains, heritage sites and extensive green countryside. Unique dining and shopping experiences in Hong Kong have made the city more alluring to tourists. Renowned as the culinary capital of Asia, Hong Kong boasts more than 11,000 restaurants serving Cantonese and regional Chinese food, Asian cuisines and Western fare. Being a truly "Shoppers' Paradise", a sheer variety of products and brands in all price ranges can be found in Hong Kong.

The conference host recommends participants o take the tube, which is known as the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in Hong Kong http://www.mtr.com.hk/jplanner/eng/planner_index.php tel: (852) 2881 8888.  Participants can walk to the nearest MTR station from Metropark Hotel, i.e. the MTR Wan Chai Station to either MTR Admiralty or Central Station. Local bus service is also a possibility. There are a number of bus routes operated by First Bus http://www.nwstbus.com.hk/home/default.aspx?intLangID=1, tel: (852) 2136 8888; however as these bus routes are not door to door from Metropark Hotel to Bank of America Tower (conference venue). We have been advised that the MTR is the prefered method of reaching the conference venue, as it may not prove easy for participants to identify the bus stops and destinations.
