think”
( How do technologies mediate people's
lives and produce profound and unexpected consequences. When we set
things out into the wild, new formulations and the unexpected can
happen. I was born about the time of the first stored program
computer. The inventors of these devices had no thoughts about eLearning or
Grand Theft Auto. Although the computer is about to reach its 60th
birthday, ICT in education still seems adolescent and it is late
developer and slow learner - but teenagers seem to be quick to pick up new
technology. What is between now and the horizon? What are the
technologies that are now setting out into the wild and how might
learners and designers of learning react to them?)
The International Conference on
e-Learning (ICEL-2008) invites researchers, practitioners and academics to
present their research findings, work in progress, case studies and
conceptual advances in areas of work where education and technology
intersect. The conference brings together varied groups of people with
different perspectives, experiences and knowledge in one location. It aims
to help practitioners find ways of putting research into practice and
researchers to gain an understanding of real-world problems, needs and
aspirations.
In it’s third year, we are
delighted to be bringing the conference to The University of Cape Town.
UCT’s mission is to be an outstanding teaching and research
university, educating for life and addressing the challenges facing our
society. At UCT we are committed to academic freedom, critical scholarship,
rational and creative thought, and free enquiry. It is part of our mission
to ensure that these ideals live; this necessarily requires a dynamic
process of finding the balance between freedom and responsibility, rights
and obligations, autonomy and accountability, transparency and efficiency,
and permanence and transience; and of doing this through consultation and
debate.
Located at the very tip of
Africa, Cape Town
is the home of four universities within a 20km radius of one another, and
the gateway to diverse cultural attractions. In addition to a formal
conference programme, pre-conference workshops and cultural programmes will
also be available to enable visitors to benefit from the artistic,
scientific, historical, political and craft richness available in the area.
In the spirit of facilitating knowledge transfer and exchange, the
organisers of the conference have agreed to subsidize attendance for
non-presenting students and academics from African nations. For further
information about sponsorship please contact Sue
Nugus.
UCT looks forward to welcoming participants from all over the world and I
hope that you will be able to join us. Learn more about the Centre for Educational
Technology here.
Of special interest, a series of pre-conference workshops
organized by the Center for Educational Technology will take place on the
24-25 June. Click here for further details.
