General information
|
Montreal is the second largest city in Canada
and is situated in the southwestern corner of Quebec
approximately 270 kilometres southwest of Quebec City,
the provincial capital, and 190 kilometres east of Ottawa, the federal capital. The city is
located on the Island of Montreal at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa
Rivers. The port of Montreal
lies at one end of the St. Lawrence Seaway, which is the river gateway that
stretches from the Great Lakes up into the Atlantic
Ocean.
Well-known for its multi-cultural population, Montreal is often referred to as a
bilingual city. As in most parts of Quebec,
French is the most common spoken language and only Paris can claim a higher francophone
population. Nevertheless, there is a substantial anglophone community in Montreal, and many of
the residents are bilingual.
