| General information | Located in the North of England, close to the west Pennine Moors, Bolton is a former mill town. Archeological evidence shows settlements from the bronze age and documentary evidence from 1067. The link with cloth production seems to have started in 1337 when Flemish weavers settled in Bolton and introduced woolen cloth manufacture to the area. The 19th Century saw Bolton as a seat of the industrial revolution with local inventors Richard Arkwright and Samuel Crompton transforming the cotton industry that sustained life in the town and the opening of the Bolton and Leigh Railway adding to the transport options provided by the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal. By the early 20th Century, Bolton was the third largest engineering centre in Lancashire, maintaining its importance as a centre of industry well into the late 20th Century, when industry was replaced by more service-led enterprises, particularly in technology related fields. Now in the 21st Century, Bolton is undergoing a major regeneration, both architecturally and industrially. The University is at the heart of one of these projects, the Bolton Innovation Zone, a £300 million development that aims to create a cultural and creative industry focal point in the town. |
