The End Game

GETTING THE DOCTORATE FINISHED

For doctoral degree candidates and their supervisors

A half day workshop preceding the 7th European Conference on Research Methods in Business and Management (ECRM 2008)

Presented by

Dr Dan Remenyi

Wednesday 18 June 2008, 1430-1730

Regents College, London, UK

Some doctoral degree candidates in business and management studies find it difficult to know when they have finished. There is a tendency to allow doctoral degrees to drag on and for degree candidates and their supervisors to be uncertain about when the work is good enough to submit. There is also debate about how the dissertation should be presented and what constitutes a contribution to the body of knowledge. In addition there can be a high degree of anxiety about the nature of the viva as well as how to cope with making the changes recommended in the examination report.

This half day workshop provides a detailed checklist so that degree candidates can check with themselves that they have done all the necessary work and are ready to submit for the examination. Topics to be covered include:

·        The essential chapters - the layout of the dissertation

·        What constitutes a contribution – presenting the findings

·        What makes the dissertation scholarly – the rhetoric or argument

·        A comprehensive and contemporary reference list

·        Preparing for the viva

·        Making changes – responding to the examination report

Who should attend?

This workshop is aimed at doctoral degree candidates. Most value will probably be derived by candidates who are close to finishing. It will also be of interest to supervisors who are new to the processes involved in helping doctoral degree candidates complete their research.

How to Apply

This workshop, which will run from 1430-1730 on Thursday 18 June 2008, is free of charge to anyone registered for the European Conference on Research Methods (see http://academic-conferences.org/ecrm/ecrm2008/ecrm08-home.htm ) and to members of staff and students from Regents College.
