ECMLG 2005: Venue and other Useful Information

WHERE IS READING?
Lying in the heart of the Thames Valley, just 60km west of London, in the Royal County of Berkshire, Reading offers the best of town life with the peace of some of England's finest countryside. While it boasts the remains of one of England's largest and richest abbeys, the burial place of Henry I and a heritage dating back to Roman times, it accommodates modern living with ease.

The growth of new office and retail buildings reflects how many companies see Reading as a town of the future as much as the present.

There are several features that mark the town on the international map, from the Rock Festival and the renowned World of Music and Dance Festival (which brings in acts from all over the world) to Europe's largest brewery on the outskirts of the town.

ABOUT READING
In the Hexagon complex, you will find top-quality entertainment all the year round (and one month can boast appearances by a top rock band, a Mozart opera, acts by the nation's favourite entertainers, as well as top-class films), while several other theatres and venues ensure a whole spectrum of film, music and performance. The Oracle shopping centre dominates the town centre, with several department stores and most of the high-street famous names represented as well as an array of restaurants set alongside the canal with cuisine to suit most tastes.

Travelling around the town, you will also find a bus system that is the first in the country to run buses on Bio-diesel and rape-oil fuel, an initiative aimed at dealing with the congestion and pollution that is the hallmark of many of today's cities. For those who need a break from the pubs, cinemas and clubs, there are the Chiltern Hills and the Berkshire Downs in the surrounding countryside. Or if you are going further, the town is close to the M4, while fast trains will take you to London (22 minutes), Oxford, Birmingham or Bristol.
