As a consequence of the current demographic developments, our working population is ageing and shrinking at the same time. This development threatens the organization’s ability to be knowledge productive (Stam, 2009). First, the large scale retirements of the baby boomers (1946-1965) the next two decades could result in an unprecedented brain drain from the corporate knowledge base. Second, the relative growth of the number of older employees, combined with the many (false) prejudices towards the productive power of this group might result in large scale underutilization of the most knowledgeable employees. Despite the relative certainty of the demographic developments, hardly any attention is being paid to this phenomenon from a KM-perspective. Therefore, the aim of this mini track is to explore this issue from a KM-perspective.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge retention from an ageing perspective
  • Generational differences from a KM perspective
  • Specific competences of older knowledge workers, compared to their younger counterparts
  • Inter-generational learning and knowledge sharing
  • Effectiveness of (organizational, departmental, sectoral) approaches to prevent knowledge loss or underutilization of older employees
  • Other topics

The international trade has significantly changed in recent decades. By the growing heterogeneity of services, new elements of international trade appeared. Trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) in knowledge intensive business play an important role in knowledge transfer within economies. Participants will find a good opportunity for presenting new research. All papers (theoretical and empirical) are highly encouraged.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • International Trade and Finance
  • Regional Agreements and Globalization
  • Innovation and Knowledge
  • Economic Growth and Development
  • Regional Studies

The essence of the resilient enterprise is the ability to recover from disruptions, disasters, crisis, hazardous situations and uncertainties by creating effective redundancy, modularity and flexibility within an enterprise or organisation.  Therefore new knowledge management approaches are required to support the development and operation of the resilient enterprise.  These new approaches should be defined through the joint efforts of researchers, and knowledge management practitioners in order to coherently develop realistic knowledge strategies linked to the realities of the contemporary society and global economy.  This mini track aims at providing to researchers and practitioners the latest relevant and effective knowledge management approaches for resilient enterprises and organisations that will contribute to the sustainability in uncertain times. Papers are solicited on theories as well as practices or applications.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge, complexity, risk, emergence and resilience
  • Knowledge Management for resilient supply chains
  • Resilient knowledge management systems
  • Agile and resilient enterprise knowledge
  • Resilience, knowledge, trust and security
  • Resilient networked enabled systems
  • Information security and knowledge protection
  • Other topics

Developed and coherent system of legal regulation is a precondition for sustainable and effective development of the knowledge based society. Negotiations and adoption by states of random international treaties through various and often not coordinated international organizations covering global and regional levels of association often rather produce chaos than create a framework for functional system of norms. For coordinated support to development of knowledge based society it is indispensable to set up a functional system of norms, where on global and regional international levels are undertaken concerted efforts focused on this issue. Therefore, this topic is of importance to be addressed, when the support to the development of knowledge based society through knowledge management is discussed.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • International Organizations and Knowledge Based Society
  • Importance of Development of Global and Regional (EU, OAU, NAFTA, etc) Frameworks for Knowledge based Society
  • Harmonization of International Law as Precondition for the Development of Knowledge based Society
  • ICT Worldwide Legal Regulation as an Instrument for Faster Development of Knowledge based Society
  • EU and Knowledge based Society
  • Other topics

There are many powerful reasons for the public sector to implement knowledge management (KM) in order to remain relevant in a knowledge based economy.   To this prospect, it definitely needs to be more research in this area which may include the importance of developing a generic KM framework and the role of KM enablers such as technology, leadership, collaboration and communities, knowledge sharing and trust relationship in enabling the public sector to enhance its public service delivery.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Generic KM framework for the public sector
  • Best practices scenario of KM initiatives in the developed and developing countries
  • Benefits and challenges in adopting KM in public sector
  • Role of KM in Electronic Government
  • Innovation management in public sector through KM
  • Linkages between KM and Intellectual Capital for the public sector

Sustainable Knowledge-based development is the objective of all societies in an interdependent era characterised by resource constriction and efflorescence of science and technology. In a knowledge-based society, the bar is raised from the development goal of industrialisation, focusing solely in tangible assets, to an economy based on the capitalisation of knowledge. This track addresses the concept of sustainable knowledge management and its linkages with other fields of management in coping with complex, transient and diversity contexts. It is intended to create a forum for discussion of the latest research findings that suggest the combinative use of different methodologies developed in different disciplines regarding sustainable knowledge management.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

·          Re-thinking Knowledge Management - The emergence of polyvalent Knowledge (using three-dimensional thinking - Economy, Environment and Society)

·          Application of Sustainability principles in existing knowledge management approaches (knowledge harvesting, communities of practice, storytelling, etc.)

·          Collaborative relationships towards sustainable knowledge generation, transfer and development

·          The critical success factors of Sustainable Knowledge Management

·          Learning for Sustainability

·          Other topics

The present economy has been characterised as a "service economy" - services are today responsible for the main part of employment in the Western countries, and their portion of the economies is increasing globally. In this mini-track our aim is to gather together models, frameworks and empirical studies, either qualitative or quantitative, to challenge traditional thinking and serve better the needs of the management of service firms in the new "service economy". The service business competence development is new and emerging field in service science and needs to be studied.

Knowledge-based interaction is characterized by complexity, uncertainty and risk. For people to be willing to share their knowledge, and to participate in implementation of other people's ideas, trust matters (Miles et al. 2000 & 2009; Clegg et al. 2002; Blomqvist 2002 & 2005). It lowers the transaction costs such as searching, negotiating, contracting and monitoring, but also increases transaction benefits such as access to dispersed knowledge, learning and flexibility (Blomqvist et al.

2002). We propose that trust is critical for knowledge-intensive service business and related knowledge transfer, yet its role and related dynamics are not sufficiently known.

Articles that identify novel mechanisms for knowledge transfer among firms and other stakeholders are especially welcomed. Academics globally and from a variety of disciplines are encouraged to submit their work. With this call for papers, we hope to create an interdisciplinary overview on the subject, and build new definitions and theory of knowledge transfer in service business to support future research.

Research issues as follows are of special interest:

  • How do service firms transfer intra- and inter-firm knowledge to support their service business? What is the role of trust in knowledge processes?
  • How do service firms build relationships with stakeholders?
  • What are the sources and dynamics of interpersonal and impersonal trust in knowledge-intensive service firm relationships?
  • How do firms build competences for service business? What are the critical skill and competencies required?
