General information

The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of History. The Alfama is one of the oldest quarters in Lisboa. Since it largely survived the earthquake of 1755, the area still retains much of its original layout.

Adjacent to the Alfama are the likewise old quarters of Castelo and Mouraria, on the western and northern slopes of the hill that is crowned by St. George's Castle. Every year in June, the streets of all three quarters come alive with the feasts in honour of the popular saints. The Graça quarter and the churches of São Vicente de Fora and Santa Engrácia are within walking distance of this area.

Radiant skies brighten the monumental city, with its typical tile covered building facades and narrow Medieval streets, where one can hear the fado being played and sung at night. But Lisbon is also the stage for popular festivities, the place for exquisite shopping, exciting nightlife, and interesting museums, a place from where motorways branch off in different directions.

See the links in the other useful links sections for more information.

Getting to

Lisbon is very easy to get to. It's just a short flight away from most European locations and also easily accessed by road, sea and rail.

The airport has daily flights to and from the major cities in the world and the national airline is TAP - Tap Air Portugal. The airport is located seven kilometres (four miles) north of the city. Approximate flight times to Lisbon: From London is 2 hours 20 minutes; from New York is 6 hours 45 minutes; from Los Angeles is 12 hours (plus transfer); from Toronto is 9 hours 30 minutes (plus transfer); and from Sydney is 22 hours 30 minutes (plus transfers).

International trains arrive in Lisbon every day, mainly to Santa Apolónia Station and more recently to the Gare do Oriente, the newest railway station located in the former Expo Park, today known as Nations Park. Intercity trains connect all of Portugal's major cities to either Lisbon or Porto. Both the comfortable Alfa Service from Porto and the InterCity train from Faro take 3 hours 30 minutes to reach Lisbon. There are overnight trains from Madrid (10 hours) and Paris (18 hours 30 minutes).

Taxi costs

From the airport

By taxi
Leaving the arrival hall, there is a taxi stand. It should not take longer than 15 min and not cost more than 10 Euros. For each luggage piece it is charged 1,60 Euros.

Local Transport information

Public Transportation in Lisbon

Getting around the city
If you don't have a lot of luggage (in which case, a shuttle service or taxi would be the best option), the best way to reach the centre of Lisbon from the airport is taking the AeroBus. Once in the city, the Metro is the most efficient way to get around, especially to go between downtown and uptown. For daytrips, consider the regular trains or the excellent express bus services. See more information below:

METRO (Subway/Underground)

Lisbon's metro (subway or underground) is modern, clean, and efficient. It runs from 6:30AM to 1:00AM, and many of its stations are decorated with contemporary art, making it a tourist attraction in itself. See a map of Lisbon's metro system to locate all of the stations (and www.metrolisboa.pt for additional information).

TRAMS
Riding tram 28 just for the experience is a must in Lisbon.

TAXI
To reach attractions outside the centre or to get around late at night (after 1AM when the metro closes), take a taxi. It should not cost more than 10 euros to go between anywhere within the city and the centre (Baixa).

TRAIN

The nearest train station to Lisbon airport is Oriente in the Parque das Nações district, a short taxi ride away. There are links to several different destinations outside and also within the city. Prices are fairly cheap (although not as cheap as the buses), and the service is generally very prompt and of a good standard. All trains going to destinations within Portugal also pass by Oriente Station, although they depart from Santa Apolonia Station, close to the city center by Alfama.

The Lisboa Card, once purchased, offers free metro, tram and train rides.
