| General information | Situated in the eastern part of the central Alps, Graz is a World Cultural Heritage Site and the old town is regarded by many as one of the best preserved city centres in central Europe. The capital of the Styria region of Austria, Graz is closer to Slovenia than to Vienna and was originally a Slovene settlement known as Gradec, or small fortress. “Graz” is first thought to have been used in around 1128. Since then, it has been almost continually occupied and was for a time, home to the Habsburg family, who ruled their region from Schlossberg Castle. The second largest city in Austria, Graz is famous as a university town, with nearly 1/6th of it’s population being students. Tesla, Schrödinger and Kepler are all associated with Graz universities, and the impact of this is shown in the vibrant night life of the city.
