Conference Chair: Christopher Turner, University
of Winchester, UK
Programme Chair: Neil Marriott, University
of Winchester, UK
Keynote Speaker: Professor
David Brooksbank, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, Wales,
UK
In its
3rd year, the conference will be held in Winchester, United
Kingdom. Winchester
is the ancient Anglo-Saxon capital of England and in its cathedral are
buried many of the ancient Kings of England alongside Saints, Bishops, and
notable `commoners´, such as Jayne Austen. The Great Hall in Winchester houses the
reputed King Arthur’s Round Table and Sir Walter Raleigh was also tried
for treason here. Winchester is located in county of Hampshire
and is one hour from London
with excellent communication links by train, coach or car.
Winchester University was formally
designated a university in 2005 but has a long history dating from 1840.
Until recently, the college bore the name of King Alfred, the Anglo Saxon
scholar-king known as King Alfred (Aelfred) the Great, or King of Wessex who succeeded to the crown in 871AD. He has the
reputation of being a great warrior as well as a social reformer who built
towns and promoted education by starting schools and translating texts from
Latin and is considered the first King of England.
The University of Winchester is small by today’s
standards with some 3000 full-time and 2500 part-time students. However, the
University pro-actively deploys ICT in all of its courses, has received
quality ratings for its teaching in several subject areas and is
well-regarded by the student community. On behalf of the University of Winchester,
I would like to welcome academics and researchers to the conference to be
held in September 2008. We hope that you find the conference programme
interesting and useful in advancing your professional and research interests.
