University information

EPFL is one of the two Ecoles Polytechniques fédérales in Switzerland. It has three missions: education, research and technology transfer at the highest international level. Associated with several specialised research institutes, the two EPFs form the EPF domain, which is directly dependent on the Federal Department of Home Affairs.

 

EPFL, in its idyllic location on the shores of Lake Geneva, brings together a campus of more than 10,000 people. By its novel structure, the school stimulates collaboration between students, professors, researchers and entrepreneurs. These daily interactions give rise to new and groundbreaking work in science, technology and architecture.

The hotel is located minutes from the Lausanne-Flon station. For easy directions click here.

A metro, called TSOL or line M1, connects the centre of Lausanne to the EPFL. Take the metro at 'Lausanne-Flon' (Map)  Metro leaves 'Lausanne-Flon' every 10 minutes at ... 8:00, 8:10 ... (In rush hours: every 5 minutes). The journey takes 13mins

 

Conference dinner venue

The conference dinner will take place on the Henry Dunant, a boat, cruising on Lake Geneva. The dinner is sponsored by the City of Lausanne.
                                                                                                                     

General information

Lausanne is located on the shores of Lake Geneva facing Evian-les-Bains, France in western Switzerland, between a spectacular Alpine peak panorama and the breathtaking beauty of gently sloping vineyards and picturesque medieval villages. Home to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, Lausanne has a rich history and many of it’s landmarks are still standing.

Getting to

Geneva Airport

EPFL is 59 KM from Geneva International Airport. There are trains direct to Lausanne departing regularly. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes. There is a metro stop on the EPFL campus. Take the Line M1 from Flon.

 

Zurich Airport

EPFL is 230Km from Zurich Airport. There are trains direct to Lausanne departing regularly. The journey takes approximately 2hrs 30 minutes. From Lausanne, take the Line M1 metro to EPFL.

 

By Car

In Switzerland, highways are labelled by green signs and are composed of the letter A followed by the corresponding number.. A mandatory Motorway Sticker is MANDATORY to drive in Switzerland and these are available in post offices, service stations and at the border. The price is 40 CHF (approx. 25 EUR). The use of the seat belts is also mandatory for all occupants of a motor vehicle.

 

  • From Airport Geneva-Cointrin, take highway A1 to Lausanne.
  • From Airport Zurich-Kloten, take highway A1 to Bern. Then follow A12 - A9 to Lausanne.
  • From Airport Basel-Mulhouse, follow highway A3 to Basel. Then take A2 - A1 to Bern and after A12 - A9 to Lausanne.

Follow the direction to Lausanne sud and take the exit Université-EPFL.

Climate in conference month

During July, the climate is usually pleasantly warm and occasionally humid. Temperatures vary from lows of 15 degree Celsius to highs of about 30 degree Celsius. Participants should be prepared for variable weather conditions. Jackets or light coats may be required on occasion.
